Skincare Science Mini Lesson – Winter Moisture Loss

Why Your Moisturizer Stops Working in the Winter

Cold air is ruthless. It steals moisture from your skin faster than you can say “why is my skin so dry”? But here’s what’s actually happening — and why your moisturizer might suddenly feel like it lacks… moisture.

1️⃣ Humidity drops = your skin loses water on contact

Low humidity means the air is basically a thirsty sponge.

The moment you step outside, it starts pulling water out of your skin.

This is called transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and it spikes in cold weather.

2️⃣ Your barrier is stressed out

Wind + heat indoors + cold outside = double trouble micro-damage.

Even if you don’t see irritation, your lipid barrier gets disrupted.

When the barrier is weakened, hydration escapes and actives feel harsher.

3️⃣ Water evaporates before humectants can help

Ingredients like hyaluronic acid work by binding water — but in dry air, there’s no water to bind.

So you need other special ingredients to lock that moisture in.

4️⃣ In the winter, your moisturizer formula matters more than ever!

Winter skin needs three things working together:

Humectants to pull hydration in

Emollients to soften and smooth

Occlusives to seal it in

Miss one, and your skin feels tight an hour later.

Behind the Shield takeaway:

Your skin isn’t “failing” you, but your moisturizer might be!

Your formula didn’t change — your environment did.

That’s why Gladiateur BeautyTM builds moisturizers with barrier-first architecture:

hydration, cushioning, and protection working as one.
