Each tier represents Gladiateur's preferred standard when appropriate for an ingredient's category and intended function. Not every ingredient can qualify for every tier, and lower placement does not imply an ingredient is less safe or less effective. It reflects the category of evidence that justifies its inclusion.
TIER 1: ORGANIC
The gold standard of sourcing integrity. Organic ingredients are agricultural — botanicals, oils, butters — grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, and certified under recognized organic standards. Certification is required for Tier 1 placement, which means the paperwork exists, the farm was audited, and someone staked their certification on it.
Not every ingredient can be organic — lab-produced actives and biotech ingredients don't grow in fields. Tier 1 is reserved for the ones that do, held to the highest sourcing bar we can verify.
Examples: certified organic rosehip oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, botanical extracts
TIER 2: COSMOS-COMPLIANT
COSMOS is the global benchmark for clean cosmetic formulation — a rigorous standard that governs not just what an ingredient is, but how it's sourced, processed, and verified. Tier 2 covers the ingredients that clear that bar: actives, humectants, extracts, peptides, and preservation systems approved under COSMOS or ECOCERT standards.
These aren't ingredients that almost qualify. They cleared a third-party standard built by chemists and regulators who do this for a living. We use COSMOS as a reference point, not a ceiling.
Examples: niacinamide, allantoin, beta-glucan, glycerin, Geogard ECT
TIER 3: BIO-BASED / BIO-IDENTICAL
Where molecular identity earns its place. Bio-based and bio-identical ingredients are included because they match a molecule the skin already knows — regardless of how they were manufactured. The body doesn't distinguish between hyaluronic acid produced by a plant and hyaluronic acid produced through biofermentation. The molecule is the molecule, and the manufacturing route doesn't change what it's built to recognize.
Tier 3 ingredients are evaluated on three criteria: functional equivalence to their natural counterpart, sustainability of production, and skin compatibility. If they clear all three, they earn their place.
Examples: hyaluronic acid, squalane, sodium PCA, bio-identical ceramides, Bisabolol
TIER 4: NATURALLY-DERIVED
Nature as the starting point, science as the finish. Naturally-derived ingredients originate from plant, mineral, or other natural sources and are refined or processed into functional cosmetic materials — without claiming molecular identity to a naturally occurring compound. They may not hold a COSMOS certification, but their origin is traceable, their processing is documented, and their placement here is disclosed — not assumed.
This tier also includes naturally-derived preservation systems. Microbial contamination is a real safety issue in water-containing formulas. Preserving them isn't a compromise — it's the responsible call.
Examples: Cera Bellina (Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax), Hemisqualane, Lecithin
TIER 5: SCIENCE-DOCUMENTED
The bluntest tier on the chart. Not every ingredient that belongs in a high-performance formula was grown in a field or cleared by COSMOS — and pretending otherwise isn't transparency, it's cosmetic theater. Tier 5 exists for ingredients that don't fit Tiers 1–4 but clear a different bar entirely: documented safety, scientifically-proven performance, and a formulation rationale on file that explains exactly why they're here and why the available naturally-derived or COSMOS-compliant alternatives require a meaningful compromise in performance, stability, or user experience.
Two questions have to be answered yes before anything lands here: Is it well-documented for safety? And is it performance-justified? Neither alone is sufficient. Both have to pass.
This isn't a category of exceptions. It's the framework being straightforward about what high-performance formulation actually requires.
Tier 5 shows up selectively — and intentionally. It's not the backbone of the line. It appears where performance cosmetics and hybrid skincare demand it. For example, an anhydrous treatment stick where Dimethicone creates the glide that makes active delivery possible, or a longwear lip formula where Polyisobutene provides the film integrity that keeps color locked for hours. These are the formulas where the available alternatives fall meaningfully short at the same performance level. When applicable, we document it, we disclose it, and we put it here — where you can see exactly what it is and why it earned its place.
